Wiper Motor and Electric Handbrake
My next task was to fit the windscreen wiper motor. I wasn't 100% sure how this all fitted together as it was not made up. I had a number of washers which I wasn't sure what to do with however after a call with AK they advised that two of the washers must be spares. I just had the circlip left which I attached to the back of the wiper motor to hold in place the wheel inside. The motor was already greased so I set about fixing the rack (long wire) inside the motor and running it through each of the wiper wheel boxes before bolting the wiper motor in place. There is an earth point from the AK loom that needs attaching to the wiper motor mounting plate so I added this and then bolted it all inplace. The rack runs through tubing that requires cutting to size between each wheel box and between the motor and first wheel box. You have to remember to allow additional length as each end needs flaring so it can clamp in place within each wheel box. There is a slight kink in the first section however I was still able to freely push the rack through this therefore hopeful it will work fine. I will trim any excess off the far end once I have it up and running.
I moved on to wiring up the electric handbrake. I had already connected the cables from the actuator so they were nicely placed with the other required wires from the AK Loom. I added spade connectors and then soldered each one. There were only two wires I was unsure about as they were not marked on the diagram I had received from AK. I quick call to AK confirmed that the Red/Blue and Brown (earth) wires needed connecting to the terminals marked 'Normal Open Contact......Close Contacts' (either wire can go on either connector). I was intending to add the handbrake box on to the scuttle hoop in the drivers footwell however I changed my mind and located just back from the drivers door. I wanted to protect all of the wiring so I hunted round for a suitable box. I found a Match Attax box that my son had which was a perfect size (hopefully Thomas won't miss it, I am sure it's been sitting in his drawer for ages 😀. I cut a hole in one end to allow the cables to run through and added some velcro to keep it in place. I am pretty happy with my solution...
