Various jobs completed
So my Cobra goes to SMS Autospray on Wednesday 5th April and it will be with them for near on 5 weeks. We booked in with them some 7 months ago and the time has just flown by. SMS Autospray are the guys that do the prep and spraying for lots of Cobras (regularly used by AK SportsCars) and Lotus Cars. They were featured on 'Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars' and did a stunning job on a Lotus Esprit, a car that I once owned (not this actual one, mine was an S2 Turbo in white). Anyway here is list of jobs I've been working on prior to paint..
I was not happy with the hole under the passenger side wheel arch accommodating the alternator so I set about redoing this. I used some stainless steel from an old bathroom cabinet. I cut this to size and used p38 to hold it in place before fibreglassing it all in and repainting.
I extended the cables from the gearbox (speed sensor & reverse light switch) and run these in plastic conduit with heat shrink wrap, cable tying where necessary. I made a holes in the body from the engine bay and run the cables through in to the cabin area ready for when I attempt the wiring. There is also a cable on the gearbox that is hardwired in but not used, I cable tied this up out of the way.
I also fitted the wiring to the fuel pump, again running it in conduit and cable tying this above the fuel line. This is also now in the cabin area ready for connecting.
There is a section of fibreglass in the drivers footwell that is removed by AK, this is to allow the body to fit on the Gen3 chassis properly. Apparently without this cut out it's impossible to get the body on as it hits the chassis. I have now refitted this fibreglass section in place with some P38 and will be running some tiger seal round this area too just to ensure there is no water ingress.
I filled up the Cobra with gearbox, diff and engine oil to the required limits. I think the quantities were as follows however I will have to double check this so don't take my word for it: ATF Dextrin 3 Transmission Fluid 2.5 litres / Diff Oil 2.1 litres / Mobil 1 ESP 5W 30 Oil 5.2 litres (Engine already had some oil in when primed etc by RoadcraftUK)
I added the bonnet and boot trim as this is something SMS Autospray want in place to ensure they get the shut-ins correct. I need to check to see if they also want the door trims in place
I fitted the j-pipe and gaskets on to the headers using some exhaust paste. This was a really fiddly job and took some time to complete, hopefully it;'s fully sealed!
We had bought battery trays from AK SportsCars. We are using the Bosch S5010 85A/H 800A battery which is rather large to say the least!
